Drudkh (2006) Blood In Our Wells 2/05/2008

I've been on a metal kick the last couple of days, so here's one of the better relatively recent releases. Black metal from Ukraine, featuring some of the dudes from Hate Forest and a few other bands. Yeah, the quality of the recording isn't that good, yeah, the shrieking vocals are kinda off-putting before you develop a taste for them, but Drudkh combine both the great atmospherics of the best blackest of the black metal with really solid riffing, and a sort of Slavic mysticism thing going on too. "When The Flame Turns To Ashes" fucking slays.

(If you're unfamiliar with black metal, give it a shot. It is not the same thing as death metal, although a lot of people think it is. Black metal is atmospheric, even ambient lo-fi metal made by genuinely dangerous sociopaths in Europe; death metal is masturbatory pap made by misguided nerds with anger control issues, and is an American phenomenon in origin).

tracklist

01 nav'
02 furrows of gods
03 when the flame turns to ashes
04 solitude
05 eternity
06 ukrainian insurgent army

I thought you listen to black metal in a dungeon while you listen to death metal in an ice castle.

at a death metal concert you get the shit kicked out of you, at a black metal concert everyone's really nice but you get drenched in the blood of something or other anyway.

I like death metal too but that doesn't mean it isn't masturbatory pap

and if you think it's half as awesome as black metal then you're fooling yourself

Ha! I'm going to have to go with tpot on this one. I, too, love death metal, but as far as my preferences in the metal genre are concerned, black metal wins every time, period.

Drudkh are incredible, I love everything they've done. I already have this album, but if anyone reading this is thinking about downloading the album, DO IT!
